Hello Bearcat,

I don't know if there are any more rabbits in your hat, but you have produced all the details that I was searching for. I wish I had your expertise!
I am going to re-open this link later today and see what I can copy down. There are details in there that I had no idea about!

My grateful thanks, I shall return to let you know how I get on.

Regards,

Colin.

Colin,

May I suggest that you do your own checks on the details in the published family tree. Just for your own peace of mind. It will also give you more satisfaction, rather than just taking them as gospel -- you will have confirmed the details yourself.

If you are only just starting on your 'Family History' journey --- always work backwards through census records and check marriages and births as you come to them. Record the details of siblings -- that can be very useful --- then come forwards to find deaths of parents -- if they left any Wills (there is a Probate Calendar from 1858 on Ancestry -- prior to 1858 you can find indexes at the local archives -- or at the subscription site 'origins.net').

Please come back if you hit any 'brick walls' -- which we all get -- or have any queries at all. Things can be very confusing at first!

Good luck.

It's great to find an online tree but please remember to be wary of other peoples' trees.  It's worth checking all the information for yourself.

Thank you bearcat and Pennines,

I shall heed your warnings and when the initial excitement has passes, I shall "get to work" checking them.
All this mention of Wills, Probate Calendars and Local Archives is confusing, but I shall try to make my way forward and return for advice if any 'brick walls' appear!

Thanks again, your advice is invaluable.

Regards,

Colin.

My sincere apologies if I have confused you, Colin. That's the last thing I wanted to do.

Wills etc. are for the future then.

All you need to do at this moment is concentrate on census records and births and marriages -- and enjoy that 'wow' feeling when you find one of your ancestors.

Hello Janan (Jan) and Pennines (June), also a note for sgf28,

Thanks you, that makes the details that youi ghave so much clearer - no need for an apology!

To sgf28, thanks for that link, I suspect that that was for my father's parents and now explains where his second name of 'Ames' originated - fascinating!

(I hope this doesn't become 'addictive'!!)

Regards,

Colin
