Help to unravel George Greatbatch!
« on: Friday 12 September 14 22:05 BST (UK) »
George was born in 1801 in Etruria and as far as I can see he had three wives:

1.  Caroline Ingram who he married in Birmingham in 1828 and appears on the 1841 census with him before she dies in December 1841

2.  Martha (surname unknown and date of marriage unknown) who appears on the 1851 with him and cannot find her dying.

3.  Charlotte Shirley who he married in 1862 in Wolstanton but appears with him as Charlotte 'Greatbatch' on 1861 census

Initially I would be grateful if anyone can find who Martha was but also to determine if there were any more children than the following (dates approximate from census):-

with Caroline - Edwin (b.1830) and Reuben (b.1837)

with Martha - Thomas (b.1845), Emily (b.1847), Jessie (b.1848), Mary (b.1852) and Catherine (b.1856)

thanks

If you get a birth cert of one of the children he had with Martha, it will tell you her maiden name, which might help.

A possibility-

Amongst the brides and grooms on that page are George Greatbach ( no t) and Martha Wilding

Death Martha Greatbatch in 1852 or 1857, Stoke on Trent reg district.
(Family living in that reg district in 1861)

George Greatbatch , potter, widower of Etruria, father William  , potter ,  and Martha Wilding
17 Aug 1843 Hanley , St John

Also -

George Greatbatch , potter ,widower , father William etc married Charlotte CHESTER 24 Aug 1858
Betley St Margaret Staffs

In the Greatbatch / Shirley marriage George is only 23 and gives his father as John Rod , cordwainer - not the right George Greatbatch methinks.

There is an Albert Edward Greatbatch given as born in Stoke in 1866.His mother's maiden name is given as Shirley according to Staffordshire BMD.Would I be right in saying George dies before 1881?For mother Charlotte has apparently re-married to a Samuel Malkin. It seems Charlotte married Samuel Taylor Malkin at Hanley St John in 1872.

This Albert Edward is of interest to me.For he is showing as the father in 1901 of a Harold Greatbatch who is in my Tree.Harold was born in Hanley in 1900.Albert Edward married an Emma Swetnam at Hope Holy Trinity in 1890.This Harold was to marry my relative Maud Hughes at Wolstanton in 1921.

Other Greatbatch children born with mother's maiden name of Shirley are Elizabeth(1862) given as born in Shelton,Arthur George(1864) given as born in Burslem and Charlotte Elizabeth(1869) given as born in Shelton. There is a possible death for Elizabeth in 1865 in Wolstanton.Charlotte Elizabeth died in Stoke in 1870

So did I . George Greatbatch and Charlotte Shirley are the wrong age and George's father and occupation are wrong - details are from an image so I am confident they are accurate. The correct marriage appears to be George Greatbatch and Charlotte Chester in 1858 as given in reply #2.
