In 1861 I suspect this is John - Lodging in Ryton, Gateshead,Durham and working as a Coal Mining Apprentice - again just listed as born Scotland

Pre 1861 there are options for James  with two in Ayrshire although a tree on Anc suggest this is his family in 1851 Living at 14 Wallaceton H, Dalry, Ayrshire   The father's job does make it likely
