Liverpool Repertory School of Dramatic Arts
« on: Sunday 22 July 12 15:49 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if any records of the school of drama exist from the 1920's, my mother was there and I have a programme from 1927 and some press cuttings, but would like to know more please.

Liverpool Playhouse was known as the Liverpool Repertory Theatre in days of yore. Have you tried them?

I have made some enquiries, but not come up with anything much.  I think the school put on their productions at what is now The Epstein Theatre, it was then, I think The Crane Hall. I know she was in The Merchant of Venice there in 1927, but would love to know if she was in anything else.

I am not a clever boy...just happen to live in Liverpool....I think I have found your Drama groups original name

http://lucilla-dramatic.merseyside.org/history.html

it mentions them doing Merchant of Venice in 1920 at Crane Hall....I hope it is them ...if so...it looks like a contact is there about their history

Crane Hall/Theatre, later the Neptune was much used by drama and dance groups for a single display or performance, or even a week.
I will spare you the details of my debut...

Thanks everyone, sadly the Lucilla lot are not my mum's, the principal of the School of Drama was Raymond Le Caudey, he also produced the 1927 version of The Merchant of Venice and played the part of Shylock, my mother played Portia. The stage manager was Alan Oliver who also acted in it.  My mum's friends Joyce Jacobs and Katrina Kaufmann also were in the cast, if they ring any bells with anyone.

This website has quite a bit about Crane Hall/Neptune Theatre/Epstein Theatre and photos, thanks for your help, at least I now know what the theatre now is, it looks great, a proper theatre.

I think this may be my wife's grandfather Alan Oliver who was a founder member of the Lucilla.

Is there a Myfanwy in the cast by any chance?

There is a leaflet at Liverpool RO  - but I am unable to post a stable URL link to it

"Liverpool Repertory School of Dramatic Art, established 1920: booklet"
"Booklet gives details of what the school offers.
Filed with a newspaper advertisement for the school, from the Daily Post, Friday 20th Sept., 1944.
Another booklet - (same class), no date given.
