Maybe Margaret Einslie Norie was related to my Aunt Margaret in some way, though I've no idea how - I don't recognise any surname there at all. My aunt didn't leave Peterhead until after her fathers death in 1913. This is definitely her - Margaret Main Birnie, I'm overjoyed to have located her. My aunt Nell who died recently, told me that Margaret went to live with distant relations in Cardiff - she didn't keep in contact with my Grand Father because she didn't approve of his marriage to a Catholic in Ireland. That was all the information I had on her. I'm not familiar with the area in which she lived, as I'm in Ireland. I've been in and out of Wales but I don't think I've ever been to Cardiff. I've learned more about her today than in all the years I've been searching for her so a BIG Thank you Romilly, Mabel and Deirdre.

Another way that you can check where she was is via the Electoral Rolls for Cardiff.

I'm guessing that they are held at The West Glamorgan Archives, - but I might be wrong. (I'm in Hertfordshire, & so not local).

I would try searching for 'Summerau' on the Rolls initially, - & then work backwards from 1959.

The 1911 Census for Scotland isn't available on FindMyPast, - but it's also worth trying to find her on there, as it might give an Occupation for her.

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hello sams mam,
1911 Scotland Census can only be viewed on ScotlandsPeople. There is one match for Maggie Birnie age 30 at Peterhead. One match for William L Birnie age 58 at Peterhead.
Also one match in Births for Maggie Main Birnie born 1880 at Peterhead.

It's whether Maggie has an Occupation or not that might be helpful for sams mam in finding more about her life...

Cheers, Romilly.

I agree Mabel, Margaret Emslie Norie is the connection through her mother Elspet Emslie Robertson, I know that because I've seen the name Robertson in the family tree. I can't remember off hand exactly where (I'm in work!) but I will check it out. I'm so excited at all the information - overjoyed to find Great Aunt Margaret at last!
Thanks everyone

Electoral rolls for Cardiff are at Glamorgan Archives http://www.glamarchives.gov.uk/ from 1949 - see attached. Earlier years are at Cardiff Central library local history section (but they are planning to close the section (budget cuts) at some point this year :(, transferring some of the archives to Glamorgan Archives and the rest to storage).

On the 1911 Census, the Gibsons are at 33 SYR DAVIDS AVENUE CARDIFF, with daughter Annie E. Gibson, Born 1909.

And so perhaps that's where Margaret Birnie went after the death of her father in 1913?

HTH, Romilly.
