Mathews in Clare
« on: Monday 13 May 13 18:29 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to flesh out a bit more information on my husband's tree and currently am looking at a Mungo George Mathew(s) born 1825 in Perthshire Scotland. He married a Nannie Christy in Adare, Co Limerick on 3/3/1857 and he was described as being George MATHEWS, Esq., of Cloughcl?a House, county Limerick, third son of the late Robert MATHEWS, Esq., of Elmbank, to Nannie, youngest daughter of J. CHRISTY, Esq., of Fort Union, Adare.

As far as I can ascertain there were 4 possible children

Robert b c.1857 Co Limerick
Helen b c.1861 Co Limerick
William b 1865 Milltown Malbay, Co Clare
George Stenhouse b 1872 Milltown Malbay, Co Clare

I think Mungo George died around 1897 in Ennistimon and that his wife and son Robert were listed in the 1901 census as living at Kildeema South.

Can anyone help further?

this would seem to be the Index entry fro the death of Mungo George Mathews - a research cert would confirm case of death, exact date, location, occupation etc and informant may have been his wife or one of the children :

  Name : Mungo George Mathews
  Event Type : Death
Quarter and YearApr - Jun 1897
  Registration District : Ennistimon
Age : 74  (est year of birth 1823)
  Volume Number4 / Page Number166

Births for William and George should be included in civil records.

see :

  Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon
Details included on a Birth Cert
Details included on a Death Cert

An entry for him is included in recently added wills calenders - his Date of Death was 8 May 1897, address 'Kildeemon', and his estate was Administered, which means there was no will (or an invalid one) - see :

  M*, Mathews, Co. Clare

there's also a will or administration listed for a Margaret Stenhouse Mathews that might be of interest.... appears to be M.G.'s mother

Thank you!

I actually found the will entries about 5 minutes after I posted on here. It proved what I'd thought, that Margaret Stenhouse Mathews had moved to Ireland with her sons after her husband's death in 1855.

I also found the will entry for my husband's direct ancestor William Mathews in 1872, 2 months after his mother.

Is there a way to get copies of these wills?

Entries proved in the Central registry (i.e. Dublin) before about 1904 almost certainly do not  survive, and the calendar entry would be all that is available. Wills processed in other registries, e.g. Limerick for Margaret's will, may still exist and if so these may be available to order from the National Archives.

Survival of Wills and probate documentation is patchy as many were lost during the Civil War (see Four Courts/Public Records Office/Battle of Dublin - 1922) which accounts for the uncertainty. The estates administered, e.g. George M., did not have wills.

see : Wills and Testamentary records

If documentation exists you should be able to order copies from the National Archives - you may need to order a search to check if anything is available for the entry you are interested in. See also the notes on the Will Calendar homepage  '....There is a full set of original wills for everywhere except the Principal Registry from 1900 on, and for the Principal Registry from 1904 on....'

For details on ordering :

  Obtain Copies of Archives

see Testamentary copy order form further down the page...

john christy of fort union resided in Rineroe House he was married to elizabeth mullock he died in 1861 see will calendars he also leased lands from the earl of Dunraven about 513 acres i think his wife died 1872 in ballyvaughan aged about 70. His pedigree going back to the 1600s is on the internet contained in a book which i could not get the full title of but has something to do with commoners there is a chapter on the Christy's of Aperfield ,Edinburgh ? which gives his lineage.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance.

William Mathews who died in Sept 1872 was married when he died (according to an article in The Irish Times in Feb 1873. It related to a court case involving his widow who was disputing the terms of his will, his having left 2 of them. The case involved his widow, not named, and his brother and sister).

Can anyone help me find this marriage for William?

Regards

Tracey
