He does indeed disappear Helen  :o  I've been all over the internet looking for him, passenger lists, census, wills etc.  Not a trace  :(
I see that he was a carpenter & wheelwright & that there was at least one daughter, Harriet born 1884, Westhampnett Reg. district.  I can't find her in 1891 or 1901 but did find a possible death in 1906 in Petersfield Hampshire,

Thank you Jane for trying.

I found a death notification for Harriet in 1900 at Stanstead, which is where she was born but where she was in 1891 is a mystery, with Cornelius we assume. :-)

Looks like Ellen died in Westbourne Union Workhouse in 1887, suggesting she was a pauper. Maybe Cornelius died before her? He isn't in the workhouse in 1891. Certainly something strange happened between 1883 and 1887.

Sean, thanks for that, I hadn't realised Ellen had died in the workhouse, can I ask how you found that out?  Thanks for all your help, Helen

Helen,

The burial notes for Ellen state Westbourne Union, there was a workhouse in the area at the time.

It doesn't necessarily mean Ellen was an inmate of the workhouse.  The infirmary might have been the only place that could help her medically or provide the nursing she needed.  Her death certificate might provide some clues for you, was it Cornelius who registered the death?

I found a death notification for Harriet in 1900 at Stanstead

I cant see this in the indexes.

But was going to say that it might be worth getting Harrriets death cert to see who was the informant.
