Branson/Brancen in Sussex
« on: Saturday 19 July 14 03:32 BST (UK) »
My gt grandmother x 4 was born in 1794 and on the 1851 census she has said Brancen N London as her place of birth and in 1851 it says Branson Sussex.  She was baptised in Arundel Sussex.  Anyone local to the area know of any areas she could mean as I cannot identify it.  Many thanks ;)

Can you give us the name of your ancestor?

I can't find any mention in 1851 (which you mentioned twice?) of Brancen, or Branson (Sussex)?

If she was baptised in Arundel maybe born at Burpham?  Can't see anything similar to Brancen in Sussex Place-Names that is close to Arundel  ???

Sorry for the delay! Yes it is Jane Gee who resides in Ashton under Lyne.  1851 she says Brancen N London - is that North London or near London? Then 1861 she says Branson Sussex.  Which makes me think that the N London is near London as North London is nothing like Sussex! How would it sound with a Sussex accent what else could it be shes quite specific about Brancen/Branson - is there anything like Brandsome, Branksome - unfortunately I have no local knowledge!! Anyhelp is much appreciated ladies and gents  ;)

Looking at the 1861 image I don't think it says Branson.  I think the last letter is an m.   Not convinced about the B either.  Why not put it on the deciphering board and see what people come up with?
FindMyPast transcript says Benson.

Are there any clues in the baptism register?     Sometimes the vicar adds an address.   Did she have siblings?   I can see a possible one in Isabella, baptised 4th Oct 1795.   Following them through the census might show their birth place.  Their parents George Gee and Peggy Robinson married 18 Aug 1794 but no great clues in the transcript for that entry.  Have you looked at the original?
A wild guess but could N London be North Mundham?
