Baffled by Black Family
« on: Thursday 11 September 14 12:13 BST (UK) »
James Black, born 1797 in Airdrie, New Monkland, married Jane Landells in New Monkland. They moved to the north-east of England. Jane apparently died in 1847 in Newcastle. James settled in Boldon House, South Shields, where he died in 1879.

My problem is that I seem to have conflicting information in the 1841 census.

There is a family at Barnes, Westoe, South Shields, County Durham
James Black          45  Clerk                 Scotland
Jane Black            45                           Scotland
Jessy Black           20  Dressmaker        Scotland
Mary Black            20                           Scotland
William Black         18  Clerk                 Scotland
Merian Black          10                           Not born in Durham
Agnes Black            7                            Scotland
Joseph Black          10                           Scotland
John Black              9                            Not born in Durham
James Black            1                             Durham
Sarah Black            6                             Durham
Catherine Black       3 months                  Durham

and one at Whitley, Northumberland
James Black         44  Storekeeper         Scotland
Jane Black            40                                  Scotland
Joseph Black        12                                  England not Northumberland
John Black             9                                   Northumberland
Sarah Black           5                                   Northumberland
Gavin Black           5 months                     England not Northumberland
Mary Craig             20                                 Scotland
Johanna Craig      3 months                     Scotland

But William Black, who died unmarried in Jesmond in 1905, left a will naming (among others)
his cousin Mary Bell daughter of Rev John Black (this nails his father's parentage)
His sister Mary Noble, previously Craig
His sister Jessie Matheson
His sister Sarah Matheson
His brother John Black
His brother James Black
His sister Marion Agnes Black.
Johanna Craig, daughter of his sister Mary Craig, later Noble
Anna Black, widow of his brother Gavin

Now comes the problem.

Most of the children are listed in the South Shields household BUT Mary and Johanna Craig and Gavin Black are listed in the Whitley household. In 1851, William (28), Sarah (15) and Gavin (10) are with their widowed father in South Shields. In 1861, Joseph E L (31), James (23), and Sarah (25) are with their father, and Joseph Landell, 27, born Scotland is a visitor.

So, are these duplicate listings of the same family, or were there two James Blacks of the same age married to two Janes of similar age, all born in Scotland, having a family with names in similar order at the same time, one in County Durham and one in Northumberland?

I have posted the same query on the Durham forum at
