Nanpantan - served World War 1
« on: Monday 21 February 11 15:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Not strictly Family history but hopefully the mods will allow me this latitude.

In the Church of St.Mary's Nanpantan there is a WW1 Roll of Honour.  It lists 64 names only (I am not relatred to any).  57 served and came back 7 served and paid the ultimate price.  We are currently trying to research all the names to give them some background/character.

I, with others have used Ancestry, FindMyPast, 1911, CWGC.  We have now written a piece for the parish magazine and this has been picked up by the local paper.

If you have ancestors who were connected/in Nanpantan and served in WW1 - please PM me to see if they are listed / if you can help with the project.

Thanks

Well done taking that on.  You will find much reward in doing it, and probably some frustration, too.
Can I suggest that you join the Great War Forum, where there are like-minded, helpful experts:
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
This associated site will help, too, though not interactive:

Why not put the elusive names on here theres a few of us that have experience in researching Rolls of Honour so new set of eyes may yield results.
Maybe worth asking a Moderator to post in World War One board?

http://www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead/casualty/1588283/SIMMONS,%20JOHN%20ADRIAN

Heres John A Simmons brother of Archie B Simmons whose Service record survives
Maybe that the Roll of Honour was compiled then the list of KIAs was added as they became casualties  as the casualties are not in alphabetical order whereas the Roll is ?that may explain two Stephen Holts and John A Simmons on the Roll?
However theres always possibility of two lads with same name...There is a John A Simmons listed on 1911 as a groom living in Shepshed about 3 miles away thats a possibility.
War memorials are laws unto themselves about who is added its a case of getting lucky with one thing that can link to an area.

Good luck maybe the Mods can pick up on this and post a link to the WW1 board too

The John A Simmons from Shepshed (32381 14th Hussars) was a casualty in Mesopotamia on 27/3/18 so thats a possible to check

Edwin Angrave isnt listed as RIP but he died  5/10/18

Alfred Bowley must be related to the other Bowleys on your Roll was born Nanpantan but resided Shepshed he died of wounds 25/3/18 but isnt comemorated on the Nanpantan one.

So laws unto themselves :)

Ady thanks for your input but as I have said, it is just the names in red I cannot find.  I have published a book with the details of all the other, BMD, census, military and personal recollections of descendants.

Best wishes,

Think you have John A Simmons he is more than likely one of the two listed in my post above.
For info and you would need to eliminate if not already done
theres a H Moorhouse 234027 enlisted into RFC/RAF IN Jan 18
theres also an S Holt 200492 enlisted into RFC/RAF in  Aug 16
And a John Kelsey in RNVR Records.

The RAF records arent online but at Kew the RNVR one is  downloadable, its also listed on NZ Military records....theres no one on Canadian or Australian records with matching names or local birthplaces

If they never served overseas there wont be a medal index cards so check SWB Roll too.
