Newspapers + Rathfriland
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone know what newspaper might have been circulating in Rathfriland in 1874?
I am looking for a Notice of Death of an ancestor, John Moore, who'd been a shoemaker.
Moore - Co Down
Wilson - Co Tyrone
Richards - Staffs
Waldron - Devon
Hodge - Wiltshire

  Hi,
The earliest that I think there was a local paper published in Rathfriland was at the start of the 1940s. The  obt. might have been in one of the Newry Papers, or if the person was well known in the Belfast Newsletter, The Northern Whig or The Belfast Telegraph.

  Cheers,  Sam.

Thanks - would you know if there is a site for these papers' archives?

Hello Peter,
Just a quick reply, before I look at your information more closely.
One or two look very promising. John's will proved in 1874, showed his wife as Catherine X, and named six children - two sons and four daughters, three of whom "emigrated to America", before his will was written in 1873.
One son - Edward, was married and lived in Rathfriland as a cobbler.
Edward was born about 1845 but I don't know where, and I've no idea when or where John & Catherine were married. I've had someone look at parish records for Drumgath, but cannot find John & Catherine or their family in Rathfriland.
Many thanks for help.
regards

Hi Clive,

I don't know if you have visited this site. Its reasonable at £10 for a months access to their records.

http://www.emeraldancestors.com/

A search for the marriage of John Moore around 1864 ( he had 6 kids ) shows a few married to Catherines around that time.

Hi Pete,
Yes, I've used EmeraldAncestors with some success, recently.
I suppose my search for John Moore's family is too narrow. His children, and all who followed were/are RC. There are several nuns and priests in the family. I've tended to look in Co Down and RC records- when there's no guarantee that John was RC himself.
Very interested in information from Family Search. All new to me. Is it recent?

Hi Clive,

This part of the Mormons site was recently launched and is at "pilot" stage so it may not always work. Searching is a bit of a learning curve.

There is a good search site which also uses the LDS (Mormon)site but not much coverage in Ireland.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#PageTitle

This might be useful for other areas.

Happy hunting

Hi Peter,
Thanks, I've found Hugh Wallis's site useful searching for my own family in Staffs and Cornwall. I agree there's not much original records in Ireland to give a basis for anyone's research - at least not on the internet. I'm grateful for anything that can give me a clue!
