Missing Coverdales
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 11:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone locate this family in 1851?
William Coverdale born about 1812 in County Durham
Mary Coverdale born about 1812 in South Shields, County Durham
Hannah Coverdale born in 1839 in South Shields.

The 1841 census finds them all in Dalton-le-Dale, living in Pilot Terrace, where William is employed as an engineer.
By 1861, daughter Hannah, has married Francis Appleby and her mother, Mary, is a widow. She is living next door to her daughter in Church Street, Seaham Harbour.

But where were they in 1851 and when did William Coverdale die?

Any help please!!

Thanks

Sue

when did William Coverdale die?

Did you check freeBMD? There is a possibility on there: William Coverdale, 1st q. 1846, Sunderland 24, 226.

Hi

Seen that but I somehow suspect that the family had not left Seaham. It is a possible though!

The burial in Sunderland district of a William Coverdale was only about 5 years old.  There is one in Seaham Harbour St. John's for William Coverdale age 44,  21 Nov 1856.  Registered 1856, Dec ¼ Easington.

That could well be him, proving the the family very probably did stay in Seaham/Dawdon! However, they remain totally elusive on that 1851 census!!

Have you found his birth and marriage as I cant ,not in Durham any way ,I found one  in Yorkshire son of Mary 1810 and he married there to a Ann Furniss,1836,
Can you post who his wife was ,as she may be hiding under her maiden name in 1851,

Hi,
My William married a Mary (don't have her maiden name) who was born between 1809 and 1812 in South Shields.
They married prior to 1836 as their daughter, Hannah Mary, was born in South Shields around then.
They first appear together on the 1841 census living in Dawdon, and Mary and her daughter would remain their until their deaths.
Hannah Mary married Francis Appleby in 1858 and had three daughters prior to his death in 1866.
She then remarried in 1871 to Thomas Raine (my gg grandfather's brother), and the pair had two sons, William Coverdale and John Edward.
Mary Coverdale remained in Seaham also dying in 1882, aged 72 years.
