From what you say they may well be the same person.

Remember that the usage of names was much more fluid in the 19th century than we are used to.

Amelia/Amy/Emma/Emily/Emilia/Emmeline might be used interchangeably.

Similarly Helena/Helen/Ellen/Eleanor; Jane/Jeannie/Jennie, Mary Ann/Marion/Marianne

and no doubt lots of other examples.

Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

I tend to agree they were the same person in which case she had 7 illegitimate children.  That's quite a lot.

I wonder why she didn't marry Richard Wood when she had the chance.

Hi

I have a relative whose christening, marriage and death certificates all say Amy whereas on all censuses she was Emma.

If Emma married in England then the placename on the marriage certificate would be where she was living when she married and not where she was born.

Yes that's a good point Andy the address on the marriage certificate is only where she was living at that time and may well differ from her birthplace.

you are probably right about place when she was married .. but it still doesnt explain why she married so quickly after the death of the man of her children .... but  emma and amy probably were the same because i can not find birth of emma and cant find death of amy
