burial/ funeral John Mitchell Liverpool 1921
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 12:38 GMT (UK) »
I can't remember if I have put this on before. I am trying to find the burial place/ funeral service for 2 of my ancestors both called John Mitchell, both died in 1921. I have death certs for both of them.
1 My grand father John Mitchell b 1881 died 7 March 1921 (reg Liverpool)
2. His son John Verdun Mitchell b 1916 died 8 Dec 1921, having been run over by a car, he died of head injuries.
I hoped that a car accident would be so rare in 1921 that it might have made the papers. I have been unable to find any trace of this. I think there was an inqest, but haven't been able to find this either.
Whilst on this , I know my grand father's father was William Mitchell b 1845 and his father was also John b c 1811 in Ireland or Scotland acording to 1841 census. I can't read the mark. Any help on any of these would be very much appreciated
Thanks Lynne

I think there was an inqest, but haven't been able to find this either.

Thanks Lynne

You say you have both death certs and that you think there was an inquest.

The death cert will say of there was or not, look under Cause Of Death and it will say if so or not.

If so you might be able to find something in the local paper of the time.

Thanks for that.  :) Read the small print.  Inquest held 10th December 1921.
Death caused by "injuries to the head caused by shock due to being accidently knocked down by a motor car on the 8th inst."

Don't know which paper was in Liverpool at the time, or whether the report will be available on line?

Someone requested this back in Dec 2011 it might be worth searching for them to see if they received the information you want.

To save any duplication of effort this request has also been posted on www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk

There will only be very basic information on the Inquest Register on microfilm at the Liverpool Record Office not the full report ie just date, place and cause of death. Information already available on the death certificate. You could try the Liverpool Echo at the Liverpool Record Office you might be able to find out more detail if the death made the newspaper.

Thanks for your help and proof that patience is a virtue.
Anx has a burial in Childwall for a John Mitchell b c 1811 and died Dec 1845.  I have looked at the record and abode was Allerton, which links.  I have sent for the death certificate and will hold my breath and keep my fingers crossed.  Will get back to you when it does.
Also the researcher at Liverpool records office did a brilliant job and found the two other John mitchells buried at Anfield Cemetery.  There was also a report in the Liverpool Echo, very sad the death of John Verdun Mitchell b 1916 d 1921.   He was knocked down by a car on Vauxhall road by the end of Gascoyne St and died of head injuries. The coroner's inquest said the car was only travelling at 12 mph, skidded and spun round hitting young John with the back of the car. So sad. It is nice that he was buried with his father. If you want a map of section 14 I can post one on the site.  Thanks again Lynne

Received the certificate from GRO (1 week they are quick these days). It is the correct John Mitchell. It has brought up some questions.
The informant was the coroner from Prescot. He died from tetanus (7 days) caused from a wound on the first joint of the left thumb after falling on broken stones. He was a gardener.
Can I find out anything about the Prescot coroner and was there an inquest? He died in Allerton but no address given.
Date of death30 Nov 1845. Registered 5 Dec 1845. Any further help much appreciated.
Thanks
