not sure what's wrong with it. The main site seems to be ok, but the parish records look to be offline at the mo. It's happened before and it's been back within a few days before.

I think somebody told me Mike John, who spent years working on those files had died?  Hope I'm not killing him off.  So could be some politics going on, access was free, so now somebody might want to restrict/own rights etc. The Parish register listings was of great help to me.

thank you both. I hope it does get sorted as many of my ancestors were from the Trevethin, Cwmyoy, Llanfoist & Abergavenny area.

info from one of his Yahoo group members here

http://www.forest-of-dean.net/fodmembers/index.php?mode=thread&id=38568

If there's anyone on this board who is a member of the group, perhaps they could let us know what is going on?

The founder of the FOD site David Watkins died recently, I understand it was his wish from the start that all the parish lists and forum be free to all, donations were always welcome, and those now left in charge I believe want things to remain free.  I e-mailed asking for the latest news from somebody who would normally answer immediately, but not this time, so I imagine there is a combination of legality and politics going on among the other equally generous members who moderate and co-ordinate research etc.  I'm sure there are Ancestry type groups who would love to own this excellent archive and charge people to view.

it was Mike John's Monmouthshire site we were wondering about rather than the Forest of Dean site. The post about the Monmouthshire site just happened to be on the FOD boards.

Funny that, but when I tried to access the FOD site yesterday it didn't respond, so I thought the worse, but it's back today.

Anyone researching any family living on the Wye Valley side of Monmouthshire may find searchable parish records using the FOD, same goes for Herefordshire parishes that border the Forest.

Mike John has closed his site down.
Monmouthshire has a new friendly, free to use site called MonGenes: Monmouthshire Genes that is administered by 9 co-owners.
Contact them and be assured of a very warm welcome at:-
