Flett's Of Finnichty
« on: Saturday 22 February 14 12:29 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate the family cottage of Alexander "Cornal" Flett of Finnichty b.1802,  he was the first to use the tee name "Cornal" his father was William b. 1773 who's father was George b.1749 in Broadhythe (which I think was then know as port of Finnichty area?) Any further info pertaining to this family would be great.

Thanks,

Fran ???

Hi Fran,

Have you found Alexander on the 1841 Census? Or his father William who at 67/68 years could still be alive?
And do you know Alexander's wife's name?

Looby :)

Lobby yes have found him and his father on the census and also the valuations, but there are no street names there are some numbers which would be a house no and the other no is relating to the no of the person doing the valuation I was told and the other is the value of the house?
But still no street names back then.... Alexanders wife was Margaret Cowie b. 1803 d. 1887.
As previously said William was born in the Broadhythe area which I am unclear where abouts on a map of Finnichty it would be ? the port area.. So I was thinking the house or houses would be in that area ??? ????

THE VALUATION ROLL FINDOCHTY 1878-9.

Hi Fran,

I am not from the area and in fact have never visited the area of Banff/Moray etc :-[ So I have no idea where any of the places Broadhythe and Finnichty/Findochty are.
I just wondered if you needed someone to look on the Censuses.

But I did unearth this...have you seen this holiday rental-  http://www.sykescottages.co.uk/cottage/Moray-Aberdeenshire-The-Coastal-Trail/Broad-Hythe-Cottage-16833.html

I wonder if Broadhythe was an area? Or the family home?

Looby :)

Thanks Lobby,
Yes I had written to the owners because of the name of the cottage but no reply.
but today I have been sent a very old map by a fellow Flett Cornal researcher, it looks promising and cannot wait to  get back to Finnichty to try and nut it out.

Cheers,

Fran

Hi Fran,
Just about to go to bed here.
Hope you get a response from the cottage owners, but they may not be local and might not have a clue :-\

Have you read the Statistical Account of the Parish of Rathven- both the 1790's one and the 1842 give a nice image of Findochty and it's people.

Looby :)

Fran you can read them online -

http://edina.ac.uk/statacc/

You don't need to register. Just scroll down to where it reads - For Non Subscribers and click on  Browse Scanned pages. You can then search by name for the Parish reports for Rathven (the parish encompaases Findochty)  and you'll get two results. One for the 1790s and one for the 1840s.
Gives you an indication of the village's size - no. of houses and population at that time and how the fishermen lived. No-one is named unfortunately.
Do you think Alex's father is the William on the 1841 who is the spirit dealer?
