St Mary's Portsea registers - BRIDEAUX
« on: Thursday 30 July 09 17:11 BST (UK) »
My first post here and already I'm asking for something...

I believe I have found my gr-gr-gr-grandmother on the IGI, but am not sure - there may be a transcription error.  Does anyone have access to actual images of records for St Mary's, Portsea for the following:

PRIDEANCE, PRUDENCE
Christened 5 February 1775
Father William
Mother Elizabeth

I think (and hope) that this is actually Prudence BRIDEAUX.  There are two other daughters for William BRIDEAUX in the same time frame - Eliz. ch. 5 March 1769 and Phillis, ch. 1 Sept 1771.

Prudence BRIDEAUX married James Hewett MEAKER 2 July 1802 in St. Mary's.

The surname appears as a middle name in subsequent generations, sometimes spelled as "PRIDEAUX." My branch stuck with the Brideaux spelling.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated!

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Another transcription has Prudence listed as Prudence Prideaux.  I think you can be fairly confident that this is you 4x gt grandmother.  The parents'names match and I can't see any other baptisms for either name in the area.

The two names are similar in sound, B being the voiced consonant and p the unvoiced one.  It is entirely possible that the parish clerk failed to hear the name properly.  Spelling was extremely flexible at that date!

Oh, thank you so much!  I looked at that IGI name and thought it had to be wrong, but didn't know how to check it.

May I ask what transcription you looked at (so I can make a notation of the source)?

With this, I now have the names another generation back -- a very good day, thanks to you! :)

I've sent you a personal message.

Do you have the marriage?

William Brideaux married Elizabeth Snelling 8 May 1768, Portsea.

Oh my gosh -- I just responded to your PM and then saw that you have now given me the name of my 5th gr-grandmother here!  You have absolutely made my day, Nell!  I can't thank you enough for this!  :D

Sadly, Phillis did not live long - she was buried on 23 Sept 1771 in Portsea.

This may - stress the may - be Elizabeth's burial:

Elizabeth Brideaux 1 Apr 1815 in Portsea, aged 76.

This leads to this as a possible baptism:

Betty Snelling bapt 15 Feb 1740 in Portsea, father John Snelling - which bearkat has just found too  ;D

I cannot see anything for William  :(  Prideaux as a name seems to be quite common in Cornwall and Devon.

The Hampshire CALM database mentions a Jonathon BRIDEAUX who was a witness to the baptism of Daniel Daurley of West Cowes in 1723.

So it might be worth investigating Isle of Wight records for BRIDEAUX - it is just a hop across the Solent from Portsmouth.

bearkat and Nell, you are both amazing!

I saw a marriage for Elizabeth Brideaux to a Charles Hawkins where Prudence was a witness to the marriage, but wondered what happened to Phillis.

I did see that IGI had hundreds and hundreds of Prideaux entries for Cornwall and I have no reason to think that's my branch -- but I do believe the Isle of Wight/Channel Islands are a possibility.

So much to do, so much fun!

I really needed something like this to keep my genealogical spirits up -- thank you again!!!
