West of Scotland Seaside Homes, Dunoon
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 07:22 BST (UK) »
Hello Argyllshire: I am looking for historical information on West of Scotland Seaside Homes, a convalescent home in Dunoon that served the working class of Glasgow in the l880s through the turn of the 20th century.

My great-grandmother, Marion Houston, was a patient there at census time in April 1881, receiving care for an illness or an injury. Upon her discharge she emigrated to the U.S. and met and married my great-grandfather Robert Hendry, about whom I've posted on the Scotland General page.

Several years after leaving the West of Scotland Seaside Homes, the family returned to Scotland for a visit. My great-grandparents memorialized John and Janet Campbell, the superintendent and matron of the home, by using their surname as the middle name of their third child, Marion Campbell Hendry, my grandmother's sister, who was born in Glasgow in September 1888.

Perhaps as a result of the care she received while convalescing in Dunoon, my great-grandmother lived to be 86 years old.

Thanks in advance,
John

Hi John I know that early to mid 1900's this still seemed to be the case as i worked for the social services in the area, a lot of people talked about being here when they were you because of illness in the family,
the man who could help you would be John Stirling at the Castle House Museum, and he is a source of info, for sure
you will find the email address on this link

Hi Museum Man 2: Thanks for your reply. I'm still interested in information you might have to post on the West of Scotland Seaside Homes. I've seen pictures and have found some historical information, but anything is welcome.

Regards,

Hello have scanned an article which was done for the Centenary of the Homes. Would prefer to send it to you directly as it is too big to attach here.

Please send your email address to the Castle House Museum

info[at]castlehousemuseum.org.uk (replace [at] with @)

I have sent the attachments from my home to there.
