Thank you for the fascinating information about the cholera epidemic. My ancestor John Kelley died of cholera in Chaffer's Alley, Witham, on 11 August 1849 and I have his death certificate. He was 64 and died in 24 hours!

I would like to know more about his background and in particular where he was born. In the 1841 census he was recorded as not born in Yorkshire. Are there likely to be any records of the time that mention where he was from?

Many thanks

Mike

Welcome to Rootschat. Kelley is an awfully common name, anything else you can tell us about what you have found already? I take it that Chafer's Alley, Witham is in Hull, as per this report in the Hull Times a bit later.

On Monday morning last, about eleven o'clock, a chimney, at the house of
Mrs ASHTON, Chafers Alley, Witham, fell and damaged the roof.

Welcome to rootschat Mike. You might get a better response in looking for John if you have your own thread rather than tagging your request onto the end of this one.

I will talk to a moderator and see if they think your question should be split from this topic.

Kelly is often an Irish name so perhaps John or his forebears originated there. :)
