McGaviston name in recent censuses in the USA
« on: Tuesday 12 August 14 03:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone able to tell me if there are any McGavistons showing in any census in the last 50 years?

The families were New York based from 1796 onwards and Pennsylvania based from 1876 onwards but I dont know if the name died out. I can only find info up to the 1910 census

Regards

The most recent census record available to the public is from 1940, so you won't be able to see any census records from the last 50 years.

The only McGaviston I see in 1910 is Nicholas in Suffolk Co., New York.  (There is one family in Pennsylvania that appears to be a mistranscribed McQuiston.)  From the 1880 census, the only child of Niicholas I see is a daughter.  If he didn't have any other offspring, then it looks like the surname in that branch died out with him.

Hi

I just assumed it was McGaviston as its not usually a name you would mix up but McQuiston also fits.

Im not sure whether to puruse it as a McGaviston record or not? Three different sites have it as MGaviston.

Thank you for the info about the census. Nicholas daughter had children but I cant find what happened to his potential uncles Peter, John and grandfather John senior. Im assuming Nicholas senior was his father but difficult to show any links.

There is a Pennsylvania death certificate for David Clare McQuiston who matches the D. Clair McQuiston that was mistranscribed as McGaviston on the 1910 census.  The writing on the death certificate is definitely consistent with McQuiston.  This family appears as McQuiston on other census records.

Thank you! -  that saved me ordering Freds birth certificate.

I couldnt find D Clare McGaviston death record but of course didnt look for McQuiston.

Now to try and find the death record for Nicholas McGaviston. Do you have any tips for finding the or other McGavistons as it appears they stayed in New York? Nicholas stayed near his daughters family and was photographed with his granddaughter but Ive been unable to source the magazine

Thanks Shellyesq

That gives me a Margaret McGaviston entry to follow up - died 13 Apr 1873.. There was a Margaret who was naturalised a few years earlier but as yet I havent found the links to which family line she belongs to.
