Census Lookup Help 1930 and 1940 - the Dooley Family
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 22:42 GMT (UK) »
I need some extra eyes to help me  :-\

I have a family that emigrated to the USA from England via British Columbia, Canada in 1923.

I can find them with no problem right until 1925 and then nothing. They should be in the 1930 and 1940 census.

In the 1925 census they are living in New York - here are the details from the census with some notes I've added.

1) Thomas Dooley - head - age 55 - born England - Engineer
Thomas is a widower. His wife Mary Ellen Dooley nee Carmichael died in Canada in 1913.
2) James Dooley - son - age 28 - born Canada - Engineer
James work on ships. James was born in BC Canada 15 Jun 1896 at which time the family went back to England where the rest of the  children were born with the exception of Hilda.
3) Mary Ellen Dooley - daughter - age 23 - born England - I think her job is Cashier??
Mary Ellen was called Nellie by her friends.
4) Lillie Dooley - daughter - age 21 - born England - Actress
Aka Lily - she was in vaudeville with a WC Fields troupe under the name of Denny Dooley.
5) Tom Dooley - son - age 18 - born England - Printer Apprentice
Full name is Thomas
6) Hilda Dooley - daughter - age 13 - born England - at school
Hilda was born in Canada not England.

To further complicate things I found a marriage record today that really stumped me  :-X

Sheila Dooley Nasse (it says she's a divorcee so Nasse was her married name)
Birth Year: abt 1914
Birth Place: Victoria British Columbia
Father:    Thomas Dooley
Mother:    Mary E Carmichael

to a Richard Joseph Bombardier on 24 Jun 1946 in Seabrook, New Hampshire, USA

The record indicates that Thomas Dooley is deceased at the age of 54. He was aged 55 in the 1925 census so that's why I can't find him after 1925 as he must have died not long after that census. The address they give him at time of death is New York.

I have no idea who Shelia is but the birth date and parents match....maybe Hilda's first or second name was Shelia or the name on the 1925 census is very very wrong... ???

As Hilda/Shelia was born about 1913/14 I can't verify what her actual name is as the online records for BC are only available up until 1903.

Hopefully this isn't too confusing to follow.

Anyway if anyone can find one or more of the children after 1925 I'd appreciate it  ;D

mab
