Copies of Wills
« on: Friday 13 September 13 18:13 BST (UK) »
Family Search gives results from the Irish Catalogue of Wills & Administrations, 1858-1920. I presume this means a will exists. How do I obtain copies?
Thanks in anticipation.

No, it doesn't mean a Will exists. Pre-1900 Wills do not survive but were copied into Will Books which do survive so that you can see the wording of the Will but not any of the associated paperwork. If the deceased left no Will and the estate was administered then there will be no pre-1900 paperwork.

For Northern Ireland Registries (Belfast, Armagh and Londonderry) you can see the extracts and in many cases the scanned image of the Will Book entry-

Worth reading the information on PRONI's site to get a better picture about Irish probate-

Thank you aghadowey. The wills I am interested in are not from the North & are pre 1900 so I will search the will books which I presume are in the National Library.

Hi

I wanted to ask a very similar question and this thread has helped. The will I  am interested in is from Dublin 1919. Is it likely to be available in the archives? I  too feel a trip to Dublin is beckoning, but as I  live in England want to discover as much as possible  before I go.

Thank you Aghadowey.

That is where I found out there was a will. It is my grandmother's will.  She was a widow who left behind two

young daughters. Her sister was named in the calendar as the main beneficiary/exectutor. Am interested to know

what wishes my grandmothers expressed regarding my mum and her sister.

The Calendar lists the person who applied for probate but that does not mean they were a beneficiary or necessarily even an executor.

If it says in the index there is a Will (as apposed to administration of the estate) then there will be one.
