From Newry to Mountrath
« on: Friday 09 August 13 10:34 BST (UK) »
Not really sure which Irish board to put this on.

My gt-aunt married a man born in Newry (Louis Fenelon) and he's living there on the 1901 census aged 2; by 1911 his mother had been widowed and re-married and is living in Dublin.  Two of her children though are at school in Mountrath - which seems a long way from Dublin.  Would there be any particular reason for this?

hi Alison300     :)  googled this about Mountrath which might partly explain...

"In Coote St there is a monastery of order St Patrick...classical boarding school for middling classes."
There may not have been much choice for students of RC denomination if they wanted that type of education.   The places of birth of the students are from all over the country, Clare Longford Wicklow Cork Louth Dublin etc

Thanks conahy.  That's interesting.  I thought they would have been too poor for a boarding school but obviously not.  Thanks again.  Alison
