Annie Teresa Yates, ? Melbourne c1910-1952
« on: Sunday 13 July 14 23:42 BST (UK) »
My great aunt, Annie Teresa Yates bn Oct 1879 in Manchester emigrated to Western Australia after 1901.  She possibly sailed to Fremantle in Sept 1910 with a Sarah Yates on the Otranto.  The family tale is she didn't marry, shared a house with another lady and died in Western Australia about 1950, leaving a will.  I know she lived until at least 1940 as I have some gold jewelry she sent to my mother.

Can anyone find any trace of her please or can anyone trace the Annie and Sarah Yates after their arrival (if they are not my people).  My Annie was born and brought up a Catholic, so may well have been buried in a Catholic cemetery.  Her parents' names were John and Mary Yates.

Are you sure she died in WA?
There is an Annie Teresa Yates on Electoral Rolls in Victoria up to 1942?
And in the Index to Wills, Probate and Administration Records 1841-2009
Annie Yates; Spinster; Residence - Dennis; date of death 24 Nov 1952

If this is the same one, think she might be a bit too young.

Thank you both for your replies.  I like the death date for Annie Teresa, since she is supposed to have died within a few weeks of my grandmother (who died Oct 1953, causing some problem with the will).  I don't know that she lived and died in WA, that was just the story passed down, and since I can't find trace of her in WA, this Melbourne death is a possible.

Would/could the Warragul registration be the same person - isn't Warragul 100 km from Dennis?

Cup of life - please could you let me know what the occupation of the Annie Teresa Yates on the electoral rolls was and also when she first appears in the  Melbourne area.

Also how does one go about getting a copy of the will? It would solve the problem one way or the other as I know who the beneficiaries are likely to be.

Thanks both for your help so far.

This is the indexation of the death.

YATES Anne
Father Uk
Mother UK
Death Place WGUL
Age  52
Year 1952
Reg  24195

EDIT- Sorry- I see Raylen has already published this for you above ::)

As mentioned before, this woman is many years younger than the person you are seeking.
This woman's interment is not listed on the Warrugul Cemeteries database.

I can type up the full details of Electoral Roll addresses etc a bit later, but her occupation was tailoress at some times and machinist at others.

Cup of life and Sue - thanks so much.  This is looking very promising - when Annie was in England, on 1901 census, she is a Garment maker.

Another question - is the death registration for the Warragul lady certainly the same lady who lived in Dennis.  Could the age of 52 be a typo for 72?  (Not sure how Australian BMD records work) As she was an English born spinster, it's not surprising the parents' names are unknown.

Another point - as she's not buried in Warragul (apparently), are there records for catholic cemeteries in Melbourne?

Victorian Electoral Roll details for

Annie Teresa YATES

1914
131 Victoria Pde. Tailoress

1919
1 Simpson St East Melb. Tailoress

1924
57 Gotch St Northcote. Machinist

1931, 1937, 1942
57 Thompson St Westgarth. Tailoress

There are no others of the surname sharing the addresses.

Dennis in this context signifies the Northcote area.

Wills and Probate documents are digitised online only to 1925.
To view later files, one has to order and then visit the reading room to read them.

You may learn enough from the death certificate to confirm or otherwise the identity of the woman whose death is registered at Warragul

An uncertified image can be downloaded to your computer immediately upon payment of about  Aus. $20.00.  You will need the registration number which is given above on the index entry.

This link shows what you may see on all Victorian certificates.  How complete and accurate the information is, depends on the knowledge of the informant.

I have searched the likely cemeteries to the extent I am able, but not all are available online or by private resource

Sue

Thank you for all that information!  The circumstantial evidence points to this being my great aunt.

The ship, the Otranto, seems to have docked at Fremantle, then sailed on to Melbourne.  The Annie Teresa Yates was in Melbourne during the correct time span and with the correct occupation.  The will is for an unmarried spinster who lived in the right area.

If the death cert is for the same woman, then she was only 14 years old when she appeared on the electoral register for the first time - so something's wrong there.  I think the age on the death cert must be a mistake, but in any case, the will should name her relatives back in England (who I understand, fell out over it  ::)  )

It would be really helpful if someone in Melbourne could look at the will for me and I have changed the subject line to hopefully catch their eye.
