Birth certificate
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 07:59 BST (UK) »
My 1st cousin 3x removed James Bramley was born in Bandon in 1859. His father was a soldier station there. Is it possible to get his birth certificate & if so where from.

According to the National Archives website
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0194t/
Indexes to births, marriages and deaths in the armed forces (1761-1995)
Search indexes to the regimental registers, army chaplains' registers, army returns and service departments registers in the military section on findmypast (£). The related certificates can be obtained from the General Register Office.

I no longer have a subscription to FindMyPast [can't cope with new search  ;D] but some kind rootschatter will have. Do you know what regiment his father served in?

With the GRO reference you can obtain the certificate online directly from the GRO, £10 now I believe. However, these military registers are in no way complete, as it depended on the chaplain's efficiency or conscientiousness. I know this from personal experience!

I have looked on the ifhf.rootsireland.ie website & the only James Bramley baptism 1859 +- 5 yrs is in 1864 in Co Laois.

Statutory registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864, so if this birth isn’t in the GB military births records (which were the only births being recorded in Ireland in 1859), there won’t be a birth certificate. You might however find the baptism, if the records survive. Do you know what denomination he would have been baptised into?
