Hi
I think something is wrong with the lists shown for Free bmd on Ancestry (not the site list but the copy of GRO list)

There are two entries for Mary Mason. Both are in Q3 1859. Durham 10a 327. One is where it should be and the other is alphabetically in the wrong place after Matthias.

Then under Maddison there are two listings for a Hannah Maddison. Both Durham and 10a 280

I wonder what they should be ?

Hi

The GRO Index has an entry for Hannah Maddinson and and entry for Hannah Maddison. This could be because the surname was spelt differently in different parts of the register so the GRO have included both versions when creating the index. You would need to see the actual entry by purchasing a certificate from the GRO to clarify the reason.

Given that the GRO Indexes were created so long ago you will find mistakes, Mary Mason being included twice would be a human error at that time.

:)Thank you to all who are helping me with this query.

I have also looked at Durhamrecords site for Maddison family.
Buying credits to learn of my husbands g.grandparents and family etc.

Yes that is the census 1861 for the family.
In 1863 Edward Maddison went to Australia.
1864 Mary, Margaret and William go to Australia.

They have some more children in Australia.

I have been able to follow Edward Maddison, son of William and Elizabeth (nee Hall) Maddison from Baptism to his death, then Probate in 1888 NSW Aus.

But Mary Mason has proved a bit elusive.
1851 census she is a servant in her Aunt and uncle's home William  and Ann WINTER.
Also there is Mary's grandfather Nathaniel WALKER.

Have as yet to clarify which Mary Maddison on nsw records as have bought certificate and wrong one.
As if i could find their marriage would give me her parents names.

The clue for my research is how William Maddison b.1858 and his wife Elizabeth Ridley m.1879 in NSW Aus. used Winter and Walker as second names in two of their children.

Appreciate all your help.
Thank you.

The GRO indexes should have 4 marriages (eight names) a page, prior to 1851, and only 2 marriages (four names) after 1851. In both these cases there are five names. If there is a doubt about the spelling of a name the indexers enter it under both.
