Anyone up for a bit of world travel? Harold Torr and Family
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 11:10 BST (UK) »
I have no idea where to post this as this family were a well travelled lot, but as their origins were in England....... here we go.....

Harold Torr married Amy Harriett Jane Glasby on 19 September 1898 in St Peter, Paddington. London.  Harold was in the military and was born in Paddington, London in 1874 and Amy in Southampton in 1874

1901 they are with their children Edwin (3), Alfred (2) and Lilian (7m) at Tynemouth Barracks, Northumberland (RG13 4804 37 11).  They had already travelled as Edwin was born in Cape Town, SA but the others were born in Northumberland.

1911 they are all on a military census in 'Mauritius and South Africa' with several more children:

Florence Effie, aged 9 born Tynemouth
Robert, aged 8 born Tynemouth
Albert, aged 6 born Tynemouth
Amy, aged 5 born Hong Kong
Arthur, aged 3 born Hong Kong
Henry, aged 1 born Cape Town

There is a tree on Ancestry that also has another child Gladys Mary Esther, born 1913 in Cape Town and has the father dying in Australia (no dates) but is unsourced.

So....after 1911 I have lost the lot of them......Harold turns up on a lot of passenger lists - New Zealand, Hawaii, California, South Africa but without Amy or the kids..

so if anyone can shed any light on what happened to them I would be grateful

Thanks

I think you might find them in South Africa. If you look at the passenger lists, on more than one he describes himself as a citizen of South Africa and gives his place of permanent residence as there as well. On one passenger list on 30th May 1938 arriving on the Queen Mary, he gives the place he is visiting as Fernbank, Nore Road, Portishead, England. It might be worth investigating that to see if there were relatives at that address.

The family of Harold Torr mostly remained in SA though I think Lily returned to the UK  and maybe Amy as well. Robert was my grandfather and I have some further info if you would be interested in it. I am a Torr. what's your connection with the family. Ps Harold did die in Australia having ditched the wife and family and having taken on a lover in Australia.

Harold Torr was my great-grandfather. I am researching the Torr family linked to him. Who else has information about him or others in his family?

Kevin I am not allowed to send messages to you by this site and can only reply through the forum but I am the great grandson of Harold. Robert was my grandfather and my father was Douglas. It gets confusing as my uncle is Eric Robert and my father was also Douglas and my brother is Robert. We seem to like the tradition of naming eldest sons after their fathers. I am an Anglican priest and the only grandchild of Robert living in SA. I live in Jhb and you can contact me on * and I will fill you in on my side of the family. I really would like to know more about the NZ connection as my family have all immigrated and now live in New Zealand. Douglas
