South Australia: Allen WEALE
« on: Saturday 18 October 14 20:54 BST (UK) »
Alice Elizabeth Johnson WEALE was born in 1855 according to:

       http://www.genealogysa.org.au/index.php?option=com_search&Itemid=32

Her parents were Allen WEALE and Mary Harding JOHNSON.

My basic interest is Allen WEALE who was born in London either in 1830 or 1836, the actual date being difficult to establish.  Prior to 1855 I can produce a fairly comprehensive narrative of his life, but it is post-1855 that I would like to uncover further information.   Did he marry his daughter's mother or another woman and when did he die etc.?

I wonder if anyone can help?

For the moment thank you.

Thank you all for your help.

I had seen the possibility from the Census entries that Allen WEALE had returned to England but could not find any reference to a UK inward passenger listing to confirm my thoughts.  I had registered the TROVE extracts but they were prior to 1855 and his daughter's birth.   GenealogySA indicated there were no further records and as I am not familiar with that Index at all I felt a posting would do no harm, especially after I unearthed the marriage of William Vaughan WEALE in 1914......WEALE is quite an uncommon name.

I wonder what happened to his daughter?   Probably abandoned, a condition not unknown in those harsh times.

Once again, thank you

I came across the following article printed in The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post dated 10/04/1893:

A fire occurred yesterday in Upper Tooting road, London, and when the outbreak
was extinguished the charred remains of Allen WEALE, aged 70, were found amongst
        the ruins.

This reference cannot be ignored, even allowing for the quoted age, as the 1891 Census has him living in Wandsworth and the general area of the Upper Tooting Road.

For the moment,

The Electoral Rolls for the Wandsworth area show-

1890 to 1893
WEALE, Allen. 21 Iron Mill Rd, Wandsworth.

An electoral roll registration does not of course  mean one was necessarily there.

Housekeeper Elizabeth WHELAN, of course, does not show registration as women were not voting in England at that time.
