Free BMD

  I have just learned the hard way that one cannot rely on Free BMD entries.   One should always click on 'info' and then 'View Here' to check what really went into the register.

  This is what came up in a search:

Births Sep 1923   (>99%)
Evans  Bernard A  Maullin  Dudley  6b 1688   Scan available - click to view
Evans  Bernard M  Curran  Swansea  11a 2009   Scan available - click to view

    But when viewing the original the correct forename of BERNICE came up for the Swansea entry.   The previous entry in the original was 'Bernard'.

Have you let them know? FreeBMD prides itself on the accuracy of the records it has on its site.
Of course, bear in mind the old saying about indexing and transcribing. There is guaranteed to be a certain percentage of errors.

Freebmd is transcribed by volunteers and as pinefamily says prides itself on its accuracy. 

We all make mistakes and freebmd wants to hear if they have made them. Unlike some commercial websites they will change them to read as the original and reasonably quickly. 

I presume you have reported it to them so that they can amend it.

   Yes thanks Rosie.    That has been on my mind and is my intention soon as I'm properly awake this morning.    As you point out FreeBMD is very accurate and because of their accuracy I at least tend to forget that mistakes can still happen.    Malcolm
