Perren Street, Camden - origin of its name
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 19:58 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to either look up or tell me how to find the origin of the street, Perren Street, in Camden? I visited it a couple of years ago and it's tiny! Having looked at an 1889 street map of London, it doesn't seem to be there then but looks like it's close to a pianoforte works.

Please help! It would be amazing if it was indeed named after my ancestors!  :D

Thanks in advance.

Hi

On the 1881 census (which can be searched on street address) Perrin Street is between Ryland Road and Princes of Wales Road Pancras. Ewald Dettmer pianoforte maker and his family live there. All three streets are still there and still with the same names (spelt now Perren) on Google maps

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Perren Street Camden Town

You can go down to street level and see photographs of the street today.

You can line the Google map up with older maps to see the growth of buildings and streets e.g. Greenwoods 1827 (not  a lot there)

http://users.bathspa.ac.uk/greenwood/index.html

with Kellys 1857 map (north of Regents Park helps to pinpoint it)

http://mapco.net/kelly1857/kelly.htm

Stanford's 1864 map (still can't see it but the area is building up)

http://london1864.com/

Stanford 1878 map shows the area is built up but doesn't show the road perhaps because it is so small

http://london1878.com/

and it is known to be there from the 1881 census.

Thank you so much for that info. The maps are very helpful too.

I am trying to find out who the street is named after. None of my ancestors, that I know of, lived in Camden/Kentish Town, but my Perren/Perrin's go back in London to at least the 1750s.

Is there anywhere I would be able to find this info?

Thanks again for all of your help so far.  :)

Hi

Smaller streets in London were often named after their builders, but just to put it in perspective on the 1851 census there were 364 Perrin(g/s) in London and 26 Perren(s).

Have you any reason to believe your particular family were builders or had any connection with this area of Middlesex (it wouldn't be part of the county of London until 1889)?

If you enquire with Camden Local Studies and Archives they may have some records of the street but probably only when it was built.

http://www.camden.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/leisure/local-history/

There is also (according to Google) Perrin's Lane (previously Church Lane) and Perrin's Court and Perrin's Walk (previously Church Walk) Camden Town so the surname may be significant to the area if it was chosen again for names of streets.

I do know that one of my ancestors was a bricklayer, which I know isn't the most illustrious of occupations. He and his sons built some houses in Lewisham around the 1850s.

Other than that, I have no idea. Probably no connections, but it would have been nice if there was.

Thanks for the idea about contacting Camden. I'll try that.

Thanks again

Chloe

Hi, Apologies for re-bumping an old thread but I also would like to find more history on the Road, Perren Street and who it was built by as it may of been built by my Ancestors. I have been working down Perren Street for the past 3 years in the Imperial Works Factory which is Rapha's HQ (rapha.cc) they have been there since 2003 originally with Rouleur Magazine.
