Is there a record of a pension, at Wellington Archives, for John ANTHONY?
« on: Sunday 14 September 14 23:32 BST (UK) »
John was born in Tipperary, Ireland about 1823. In 1840 he joined the 88th Regiment of Foot, and in 1857 transferred to the 69th Regiment. He was discharged from the army in 1863.

In 1874, John and his family emigrated to Invercargill. Sometime in the 1880s, John moved to Melbourne, Victoria. He died there in 1889. His occupation on his death record was "warder".

From his military record, John should have been receiving a pension. Can some kind person check at the Archives, to see if there is a record?

John.

Hi John,

The search portal for Archives New Zealand is http://archway.archives.govt.nz/

I note that a search for John Anthony gives nineteen pages of results.

Have a look, and see if you find any 'possibles'. Then one of us might be able to check the file depending on which office holds the document.

Spades - I searched at Archway, restricting dates to 1870 - 1900, and nothing came up for this John Anthony.

In a long completed thread from years ago there was information about a pension for a military veteran. The names are recorded in the General Biographical Card Index, in Wellington. It was reading that old thread that prompted me to make this enquiry. Unfortunately, I cant check myself, as I am in Dunedin.
I would like to find out when John went to Melbourne.

I can certainly look up the card index for you.

Can you please post the link to the older topic you mentioned.

Thank you, Janette. Unfortunately, one of John's sons was also called John, and he joined his father in Melbourne, before the older John died. The property could belong to either. Old John's wife Bridget died in 1886 in Invercargill, but it isn't clear if John was there or in Melbourne at the time.

Hi,

Does this help a bit, with the link of the property Janette gave for Powelltown?

The Electoral Roll for 1880-1881 for Awarua, Southland, lists two John Anthony's, one living at Poweltown, with occupation being a Laborer, and the other living at Clarendon, working as a Laborer and he also appears in the 1890 E/R and I see him in 1893.   The Powelltown John doesn't appear in 1890.

Sorry confusing with two John's

Cheers

Hi there - Young John's death registration in 1934 gives "years in Victoria" as 46 - meaning he would have been there in 1888. Old John's death, however, in 1889, gives "years in Victoria" as 15. In fact, this is the length of time he was in Southland and Victoria. I wonder if young John was asked "Years in the colony" and answered "Years in the colonies" for his father.

The informant on old John's death was the hall porter of the hospital, where he died of cancer of the oesophagus.
