BURKE Winifred... Transported to Australia 1840. Help Please.
« on: Monday 27 January 14 23:52 GMT (UK) »
Good Morning... :)

I live in Australia and I'm trying to research my GG Grandmother Winifred Burke. she came from Galway ( someone suggested Tuam)... her Father's name was Patrick Burke and Mother's name was Mary Ward....that is all I know..

Winifred's Trial was 06 April 1840 Galway for stealing  clothes she was employed as a kitchen Maid I do not know where...she was then sentenced to 7 years transportation.. she arrived on board the Vessel Margaret 3. in 1840....I have quite a bit of History after she arrived until her Death.... but nothing prior to that.
I wonder if someone could assist or point me in the right direction of where to start looking and researching as I'm not familiar with the Irish Counties ( apologies if offended- just being honest).... perhaps the person to whom she was employed ( which would be on the Trial Papers which I have never seen but would love too ).

Hoping to hear in the future.. Have a wonderful day

Sincerely

Faysie

hi there.....

I can see why someone suggested Tuam>

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRPZ-162

there is a little amount of material on familysearch.org for Ireland...... but others will indicate other sites.
but your post does not indicate whether Winifred died in Au or Ireland..........

I would have thought the original convict entries on arrival to Australia would have had some details to place of birth........

 :)

Thank you so very much for your response...Firstly I forgot to mention that Winifred died here in Australia and never returned to Ireland.....Secondly.... the only information on her Convict records says " Native of Galway. Ireland...

Winifred was given Permission to Marry my GG Grandfather ( also a Convict from England) by the Government at the time....they had 4 children...Winifred received her Certificate of Freedom after her Time was served and her 1st husband ( my GG Grandfather died) she then married another Convict and went on to have more children...

So as you can see I'm still looking for answers or at least a direction....I was hoping that her Trial Records would give me a clue...

Thanks again.

The RootsIreland index brings back 7 baptismal/birth "hits" for parents Patrick Burke and Mary Ward, 6 of them (Co. Galway) are in the time period 1814 - 1831. The records themselves are pay to view.

None of the names are Winifred I'm afraid and there's nothing to otherwise indicate that these are her parents and siblings.

However, you might just want to note the names for reference in the future.

Edited to add: Some trial and error using the index confirms these baptisms/births are recorded against the RC parish of Loughrea.

Thank You .. I am willing to have a look at the Pay Per view site ( could you tell me what it is please ) as Winifred also used the name of "Elizabeth".... is that amongst the Baptisms.... the time frame is about right also...I've been waiting for over 15 years so anything is worth a try right !!!!

Thanks again..\

Well I looked at the RootsIreland Index website and paid for some Credits. I must be using the site wrong.. the information I received was Church Baptism Record 12 Feb 1818 ( possible) Parish Tuam. Roman Catholic ( correct) Father Patrick Burke ( correct) mother Bridget Feely ( ???? unsure) Sponsor /Informant... Walter Burke and Winifred Feely.... sounds like the parents of the mother and father..... Gaffy... would it be too much to ask if you could type the names of the children.... as I don't know how to use the website and do not want to waste any more Credits...

Thank You

Hi Faysie

Playing around with the free index shows Patrick 1814, Mary Anne 1817, Catherine 1824, Bridget 1826 & another Bridget 1828 (first must have passed away).

There is a 7 year gap there between Mary Anne & Catherine where I would well imagine that there were more children - as the church record books for this time would be 200 years old I'd imagine it's very possible that there are some mistranscriptions or omissions.

Please just bear in mind also that Burke and Ward are very common surnames for Galway and it's also possible that Winifred was from a parish whose records don't go back as far.

You've also mentioned the occupation of 'miller' and I noted these gentlemen on the 1901 Census - Gort is only about 15 miles from Loughrea
