Can you find Joseph William Room and family?
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 14:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Joseph William Room married Mary Ann Elizabeth Thorn in Holborn on 24 Oct 1852 and so far I think it looks like they had 2 children by 1871 - Joseph John Room (born 24 June 1856) and William Mark Room (born 28 Aug 1861). However I can't see any of them after the 1871 census, when they appear to be in Southwark, and assume they have probably emigrated - can anyone see them after 1871?

Joseph's father was James Room (1792-1866) and Joseph was baptised in 1820 as William Joseph Room. His wife Mary Ann E Thorn was born 21 May 1824 in Holborn (Father Robert Brown).

Some Thorn relatives emigrated to Australia and I wondered if perhaps the Room family had also gone there?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Alan

They are transcribed as ROAM on the 1871 A*.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies - I had seen these details on Ancestry but then nothing further making me think they had emigrated.

When they married "Joseph" used his middle name as his first name and I think his wife Mary Ann Elizabeth used her middle name "Ann" when William Mark was baptised.

I have also found other "Room" children baptised in Battersea to Joseph and Mary Ann but can't immediately tie them in as the same family (particularly Celia Elizabeth Room born Wandsworth in 1866, who seems to have died in Perth Australia after marrying a Lewis Carter. However on Ancestry, they are showing her mother as Mary Ann Diggins  and not Mary Ann Elizabeth Thorn. Whilst I can't see a marriage between Room and Diggins, I am inclined to assume she is not related to my Joseph Room.

Hi

Just to clarify, you state that, Mary Ann Elizabeth Thorn's, father, was Robert Brown, was she a widow when she married Joseph

Hi,

It looks like I can discount any possibility of Celia E Room being involved so I am back to looking for the 2 sons Joseph John Room and William Mark Room and their parents.

Mary Ann Elizabeth Thorn's father was Robert Brown Thorn (born 1801) - sorry for any confusion.

Hi Margp,

Not yet, but most details are on their baptism records shown on Ancestry  - London, England, Births and Baptisms 1813-1906, and the 1861/71 census records tie in with the information.

Apart from tracing the two children, what I want to try and establish is what happened to William Joseph Room and his wife, which currently seems a bit of a mystery.
