Hi,
I am researching my grandparents (HOCKLEY/O’NEAL) both born in India.
My grandmother’s father was Thomas Tollemache Hockley b. 28 Nov 1854 in Murree, Bengal, India married Ellen Phoebe Garvan b. abt 1864 in Mhow, Indore, India – married 27 Apr 1885 in Byculla, India.
Ellen’s father was
Callaghan Garvan (Callahan Garvin) b. 1827 – 1830 in Rathkeale, Limerick, Ireland, d. 18 Oct 1885 in Bombay, India. He married Ellen Reilly (Hellena / Relly ?) b. abt 1837 in ??. and d. 10 Oct 1872 in India – married 24 Jul 1851, Ahmednuggar, India.

MR C Garvan of HM's House of Correction....”
5. Notes from my late grandmother –
Born Rathkeal Limerick Ireland - no date
Enlisted Limerick 11 April 1849 as Gunner 2nd Battalion Artillery (Aged 22)
Embarked for Bombay on Owen Glendower (a ships name) 21 July 1849
Volunteered to Royal Artillery 1861 in India
6. Miscellaneous notes –
I hold a copy of his Army discharge papers, dated 31-8-1869, which indicates that he joined & served some 22yrs 5mths with the British Forces, 14.5yrs with the East India Artillery followed by some 8.1 yrs with the Royal Artillery & described as a labourer. There is some conflict about his actual date of birth. On his marriage certificate the names of Henry Vapy & A. Cavanagh (who is this?) appear as witnesses. The Bride appears to have been about 14 yrs & 7 mths. The marriage took place in Ahmednuggar, about 100 mls East of Bombay.
On the Gravestone of he & his wife's grave is written "also to the Memory of her grandchildren Minnie, Clifford & Alma Nelson". It also mentions that she was 34yrs 10 months of age giving her a birth date of about Dec 1837 which gives her an age of 14 1/2 yrs at her marriage.?
I would really like to find out some more information about Callaghan Garvan and his family in Ireland before he left for India in 1849 – his birth date, siblings/family members, grandparents, why would he have left Ireland for India, did any other members of his family go to India, etc. Any other information would be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance,
Sandi
