Census ADDRESS SEARCH in Westham in 1911 - help please ??
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 23:54 BST (UK) »
Aaaaarghhhh ..... I've just spent the last 2 hours on FindMyPast trying to do an address search in Westham, Sussex for 1911.

I have found it on the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census easily but can't find the page with the houses on for 1911.

It's still there to this day with the same name so I know it will be on the 1911. The people's name must have changed after the 1901 census so I can't find it that way.

1 Spring Cottages, 2 Spring Cottages and Springfield Cottage in Westham.

They were 3 little terraced cottages side by side. Two are still standing but the third has long gone.

I just need the census page showing these houses.

I've tried various spellings with no luck.

Any help GREATLY appreciated !!

All I can say is good luck! I have not been able to get new FindMyPast 1911 address search to work for me either.

Three suggestions:

Post this query, or a link to it, on http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=683778.new;topicseen#new.  There you will find those Rootchatters who have been getting to grips with the new site.

or

Post the query on the FindMyPast Facebook page, where other users may help or FindMyPast may respond with an answer.

or

Email the query to FindMyPast so that they can privately communicate the answer to you.  This way the difficulties you have faced will be registered and, with luck, factored into the improvements agenda.

Whoops - I'd completely forgotten that 1911 was a single page per household. I was thinking it was the same as the previous years where one page will show several houses  ::)

Thank-you so very much for those 2 though - fingers crossed Springfield Cottage will turn up somewhere - it adjoined the 1 and 2 Spring Cottages !

I preferred the old FindMyPast site !

avm228 - thank you for your reply aswell - much appreciated.

Looking on another site, Schedule 19 is William Hutten and Schedule 22 is Mathew Booth so Spring Cottage not included where it was geographically located.

If you have access to another site where you can look at the Enumeration district books you could trawl through all the entries, book 02 has 293 pages and 03 had 345 pages.

Apparently there are also 1 and 2 Spring Cottages in Westham itself (opposite a pond) ... they're not my chap's though !

'Mine' are under the civil parish of Westham but are actually in Langley / Langney. That tiny area didn't have it's own mention on the census - it came under Westham.

The 3 terraced cottages (including Springfield Cottage) are along Priory Lane, Westham (really Langney!) which is a dead end.

Artifis - thankyou for your help. I didn't know how to find the places either side, I had hoped it may have been Springfield Cottage !

Hmm, I think you've got a problem here.

I found a Spring Cottage, Langney, Schedule 116 of Enumeration District 03 described as Spring Cottage by the occupant but as 2 Spring Cottages by the Enumerator!

Preceding entries are for 1 & 2 Vine's Cottages, Hide Hollow, Langney and the following entry is Friday Street, Langney.

There's also a Spring Cottage, Westham, Schedule 61 of Enumeration District 03 but again no Spring Cottages either side of the entry.

I couldn't find a Priory Lane at all nor a Springfield Cottage.

The Spring Cottage, Langney would be the one. Did it give a surname ?

They were 3 little terraced houses and I expect the residents referred to them all as just Spring Cottage but the census enumerator chose to separate them.

Priory Lane is probably a more recent name, it's a little dirt track off Priory Road (which may not have been named back then either !).

Thanks for looking.
