Royal Irish Constabulary 1816 - 1922
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 12:54 BST (UK) »
Hello

My paternal great, great grandfather was William Fitzpatrick, born in 1847 Queens County, Ireland and died 1933 in Ireland.

He was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. Is anyone able to access the book Royal Irish Constabulary 1816 - 1922 by James Herlinhy and find out if William is listed?

my thanks

I had been looking for an ancestor of mine, William Franklin.  But he would have dated much earlier, probably enlisted in the 1820s.  I was told that the earlier records were more fragmented, and that he didn't seem to appear at all.  I wonder is he mentioned in that book?  Many thanks indeed if anyone finds mention of him.

Hi KD

I will have a look for information on your ancestor when I get hold of a certain book that will help us

I am confused about the William Fitzpatrick enlisted in 1867. He was born in 1847, not 1845 and he got married to my great, great grandmother in 1887, must have been married beforehand

That record wouldn't state that he was married when he joined the RIC but that by the end of his time with them he was married.

Also years of date were never exact back then.

Again though, I have no way of saying if it is one and the same person !

Hi,
Have you written to Dublin Castle asking if his records are available?  My father was in the RC 1920 - 1922 & I received his enlistment & discharge papers from there a few years back.

I will check.

I know William was in the RIC because he is listed in the 1901 census as being a RIC pensioner.
