David Thomas Jones of Lampeter
« on: Monday 07 December 09 11:26 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful if anyone could help me out with trying to trace by GGrandafthers family.

I have been searching for this family for a few years, but the majority of my research in Scotland (where i live) and I don't know where to start with Welsh records.

The details I have for him are:

David Thomas Jones, son of David Morgan Jones (grocer) and Elizabeth Evans. The family are led to believe that he was born in Lampeter in 1897 - he is also supposed to died at Sea, although I have found no record whatsosver of his death.

He was married in Scotland in 1916, they had a daughter, Jean, my grandfather, David Morgan Jones, was born in 1920 and we do not know how long his father was around for.  I have since found out that my Ggran remarried, but not until 1950.

Anyhelp or advice on where to start looking would be absolutely amazing.  I've always been very proud of my welsh roots and would love to know more.

Thanks again.  (I hope I've posted this in the correct category)

Gillian

I've just had a look at his marriage on Scotland's People, and he was 19 at time of marriage, so born 1897 and matches with the one I found.

I've never seen a marriage by Sheriff's Warrant before. What's the background to that?

David Morgan Jones is a widower on the 1911 census, so that fits with the marriage cert as well.

Osprey,

Thank you very much for that information.

It's great.  i apologise for the error of date 1887 you are coreect and it should have been 1897.

This will let me try and find out a little bit more about him.  I have two stories about his death (1) He died at sea and (2) He left his wife and two young children and emigrated to America.  My gradfather died before I was born, and my dad was only fourteen at the time so doesn;t remember any of this at all.

I'll keep hunting - once again thanks.

Osprey - The Sherrifs Warrant seems to be for an 'irregular marriage' which was a marriage outwith the church.  Civil cemeromies weren't held in Scotland as they were in England so this was the only way they could do it - they then had to present their marriage to the sherrif or regsitrar for entry eithin theproper records. (This is what I've found out so far anyway:))

think I may have found David senior in 1891

Old Shop, Llanfihangel Ystrad RG12/4556 folio 122 pg 3
Anne Davies widow 55 farmer b. Llanarth
Catherine Jones dau 26 b. Llanfihangel Ystrad
David Jones son 32 corn merchant b. Llanfihangel Ystrad

His occupation ties in with in 1911 - grocer & corn merchant, but I'm struggling to get any further back without details of his father from marriage cert.

 :(

Given the father-in-law's surname, I wondered about this marriage

There should be a marriage for Anne Hughes to Morgan Jones after 1851, but I haven't spotted one as yet. There is this one though
