South Wales Borderers service records and medal cards
« on: Tuesday 16 December 14 18:53 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where I can find the service records and medal cards for soldiers serving in WW1 in the South Wales Borderers, I have tried looking for my Grandfather John Selwyn Taylor, he was invalided out in 1916 at Mametz Wood after being hit by several pieces of shrapnel, which left him in hospital for the next 3 years.
we have a regimental no 4/1235, although we are not sure whether this his is, which is why we would like to find the correct site.

He was born 1895 but there is no trace of a service record or pension record for him.

The Medal Roll Index has lots of John Taylor entries but no John S (or Selwyn) Taylor

Is this a possibility?

The nearest I can find to the Regimental number you have given is a John Taylor Lance Corporal in the South Wales Borderers Reg number 4/12356

He was discharged 6.9.1916 and was awarded the British,  Victory and 15 Star medals.  Theatre of War was shown as The Balkans 19.7.1915

EDIT - just found that service record and he was born 1888 Herefordshire so not your John

Hi Carole,
Thats all the information we have, something my Brother sent off for a few years ago.
so given the Hereford birth as you say we can discard that then, and start from scratch .

Hi Carl

A Silver War Badge was awarded to a 4/12356 L/Cpl John Taylor of the SWB when discharged on 6th Sept 1916. He enlisted 14th August 1914.

1235 would have been issued c1890s in the 4th Battalion
