Identification help needed please
« on: Thursday 22 May 14 15:11 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I've just spent an afternoon at my dads house, going through some old photographs and the like, when we went up into his attic and brought down something that belonged to his grandfather.

We have no idea what it is, but think its something to do with his job from years ago. (only as a guess though!)

Its a red and green sash with gold embroidered letters which read:

A.S
Railway Servants
of
E.I.S & W
Kentish Town Branch
AJH

AJH is his name, Arthur James Harper who was born in Islington in 1888, and moved to South Wales sometime after 1911.

Can anyone identify what it is, and what it represents?

Many thanks.

It looks like the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants  - not sure about the branch

The full title was:
Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales; 1872-1913

There was a branch at Kentish Town.

Do you know why a member would be given one of these? As a trade union group would he have been given it as being a shop steward or something?
