military discharge 1872
« on: Saturday 19 April 14 11:41 BST (UK) »
Hi there I have these records from findmypast of my third great grandfather john coleman he joined in 1859 aged 16 but lied saying he was 18. He was born in Walsall 1843, on 11 august 1869 he was promoted as corporal and he was discharged in 1872 I cant read what the records say it seems to be something to do with his leg?
Also is there anyway I can find out more about his army career? especially his promotion to corporal, would any more records exist on him? regards
its says his name appears 8 times in the regiment defaulters book, where can you get hold of those records

First look: This is just for the second image “john coleman2.png”. Unfortunately, seem to be stuck on the most crucial word. I’ll keep working on it. In the meantime, this might help someone else figure it out:

5. In but not by the Service.

6. Had Dysentary for which he was invalided home - Has ? being in right leg which he says swells and prevents him marching.

Can earn his own livelihood.

Not due to intemperance or vice.

---------

This is for the third image "john coleman 3.png":

That his name appears eight times in the Regimental Defaulters Book and he has been once tried [?] by Court Martial.

That he is in possession of a 2nd degree class educational [?] certificate.

That last one looks a bit dodgy given what I can see of the question on the left hand side but it is how it reads to me.

It is "veins" in the right leg. Can't, as yet, make out the word before that.

Re: his name appearing in the Regimental Defaulters Book, this blog entry might at least give you some background information:
