Excise Men in Nottinghamshire before 1829 - can I find anything?

My gt gt grandfather was an Excise Man in East Yorks and in Nottinghamshire - I can't find anything in Yorkshire, is there anything to find in Notts?

This contains details of my ancestor who had retired as an excise officer. Perhaps you'll find something about yours in here too.

I found this through the google books site, and simply searched for "fradsham + excise" (Fradsham being the relevant surname for me, of course!) There may be other editions of similar books on googlebooks if your ancestors isn't mentioned in this one.

I think I do not really understand what an excise man did - so would be grateful if someone could enlighten me - or at least point me at some reading material? How were they recruited, and did they move around much
