« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 22:41 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for information on David Barclay who was born 1849, Montrose, tried Register House for his dob, have not been successful yet, also Scotlands People, he died 1919, in Edinburgh, he married Isabella Donaldson Greig, have their dom, and children, they were married in Tranent. His parents names are William Barclay born about 1806, Montrose and his spouse was Jane/Jean Crow, again can't find a dom. David's siblings names are Maria b 1834 d 1862, Montrose, Jean b 1842, Jessie b 1844, and James, he was the witness at Maria's death. Found them on the 1851, then they disappear. All born Montrose, hope someone can help.

Hi Ann

By the look of it and from all the searches you have done, you may not find any entries in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) pre 1855. Nothing seems to show for them, does it  :-\. There are lots of reasons why this may be so: they may have not belonged to the establish Church of Scotland (presbyterian), registers lost or destroyed over the years, or very simply, they didn't register the marriage or births/christenings of their children. Only about a third of BMD events were registered pre 1855 in the OPRs, with some areas worst that others and death & burial record keeping the worst of all.

This is the entry you have for 1851?:

William Barclay 45 Labourer In Gardens
Jean Barclay 43
Maria Barclay 17 Mill-spinner (linen)
Jean Barclay 9
Jessie Barclay 7
David Barclay 2
Address: Forbe's Land North Esk Road, Montrose

Hi Ann ,

Not sure if you have this -
https://www.deceasedonline.com/ Jane Crow , Barclay , date of burial 6th February 1897 , Rosehill Cemetery(Angus).

SP has Jane Barclay(other surname Crow) death 1897 Barry Angus , born c1809.

There is this entry in 1861 as a possibility - all born in Montrose:

Jane Barclay 58
Jane Barclay 19 factory worker
Jessie Barclay 17 factory worker
David Barclay 13 factory worker
Address: 7 x?, Montrose

You mentioned a James, brother who reported sister Maria's death? There is another family in 1861, with a James and David, but don't think it is the same one given the names you have for the rest of David's siblings. Also in Montrose for 1861:

Jane Barclay 60
James Barclay 19 Mason
David Barclay 16 Cabinet maker
Address: No 21 Carnegie St. Montrose

Monica

PS: That looks very likely for death Ev  :)

Hello lyndsey86,
Couldn't find a birth for David with parents William Barclay & Jane/Jean Crow but I did find some Census Returns which look like the family.
          1861 Census. Montrose.
     Jane Barclay 58 Head
     Jane      "     19 Dau
     Jessie    "     17 Dau
David    "     13 Son.  All born Montrose.
(Transcription doesn't say if Jane is married or widowed. Couldn't find a death for William)

1871 Census. 9 North Tay St, Dundee.
     Jane Barclay 66 Pawn Broker
     Jane     "       28 Dau.
     James Lyall   15 G.Son.
     Emma Barclay 5 G.Dau.
     Jessie     "       3 G.Dau.
     Jane Johnston 30 Visitor.
     Elizabeth  "       9 Visitor.
Isabella    "       6 Visitor.  All born Montrose.

1881 Census. 17 John St, Montrose.
     Jane Barclay  75 Confectioner.
     Jane     "       36 Dau. Dressmaker.
Emmie Smart 15 G.Dau. Linen Weaver.
Jessie      "     13 G.Dau. Linen Weaver. All born Montrose.

1891 Census. 12 Peddie St, Liff & Benvie. (Dundee)
Jane Smart   47 Head, Jute Weaver.
Jessie Smart 23 Dau, Jute Weaver.
Jane Barclay 87 Mother, Retired Broker.  All born Montrose.
(ScotlandsPeople has a death for Jane Barclay other name Crow, 1897, Barry, Angus)

1871 Census. 25 Hanover St, Edinburgh.
*David Binclay 22 Servant, Waiter b Montrose.
*Binclay might be a transcription error for Barclay. I've included this Census as a possibility. See occupation for David on 1891 Census.

1881 Census. 11 Market St, Montrose.
David  Barclay 32 General Labourer b Montrose.
     Isabella      "   38 Wife          -         b Tranent, Haddingtonshire.
     Mary Martin "  10months Dau.         b      "                "

1891 Census. 49 Cadogan St, Glasgow.
David Barclay 42 Waiter b Montrose.
     Isabella    "    38            b Tranent.
     Mary        "    10 Dau     b Tranent.
     James      "     8  Son      b Montrose.
     Horace     "     5  Son      b Dundee.
Duncan Primrose Barclay 2 Son b Glasgow.

1901 Census. Elm Row, Lasswade, Midlothian.
Mary Barday 20 Head                      b Tranent. (Barday transcription error for Barclay?)
William   "    18 Brother, Coal Miner  b Montrose.
Horace    "   10 Brother, Coal Miner   b Dundee. (Age 10?)
     Primrose "    12 Brother       -           b Glasgow.
     Joseph    "      6 Brother       -           b Glasgow.
A few transcription errors on this Census. William error for James? SP has a birth for a James & a William Barclay, 1882, Montrose. (Not James William or William James!)
Couldn't find David or Isabella either on Census Returns or deaths. Will have another search later today.
               Regards,     Dod.

I see this will cross with MonicaL & Ev's posts, so you may already have some of the above information. Dod.

Dod, that is the full set for mother and David - well done  ;)

A few other entries for others in the family:

This must be Maria in 1861, all born in Montrose:

Maria Barclay 23 bootbinder
James Lyall 5 son https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYTN-J8G
Address: 2 Murray Lane, Montrose

Did she die in 1862?

Impossible to find the family to check for a James with them in 1841 :-\ Have you found them that year? A possible entry for a James in 1851?

James Barclay, 16, a Boot & Shoemaker App. Born in Montrose but living in Broughty Ferry with a Methven family.

I thought this James would connect to this entry for 1861:

James Barclay 31 Bootmaker (journeyman) b. Montrose
Mary Barclay 29 b. Banchory, Aberdeenshire
Jane Barclay 7
Elizabeth Barclay 2 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYGR-XH2
Margaret Hill
Address: Murray Street 33, Montrose

More children show born to them in the 1860s in Montrose. A check of his death cert would let you confirm his parents' details hopefully.

Hopefully with all the info provided by everyone, you should be able to check what it said about Jane's maritial status up to her death...given she showed alone without William in the censuses post 1851.

Just found a small online tree on a/try (available to view at a library if available or via subscription) http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/30647006/person/26047916620

They show William Barclay as having died in Dundee on 14 August 1881. The tree is limited in terms of info and no original document/images included. There is however a William Barclay, a gardener, b. 1803 in Montrose showing in 1881 in Montrose as an 'inmate'. No address is given so don't know whether this could be a poorhouse/almshoue -see www.workhouses.org.uk/Scotland/AlmshousesScotland.shtml#ANS

Have you got David's marriage cert? If so, what did it say about his father (occupation, alive/deceased)? I think you mentioned you also have Maria's death, with brother James reporting her death. What did this say re her parents?
