St Columb and Long Tower
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I have been under the impression that St.Columb church and the Long Tower were one and the same.  but I was told recently that St.Columb church holds the records for church of Ireland baptism, as the Long Tower would be roman catholic baptism. Can anyone confirm this as correct. If this is correct, how would one contact St. Columbs to organise a search.

many thanks
Ringading

Hi,
The Long Tower Roman Catholic Church is also known as St. COLUMBAS. Close by is a Church Of Ireland Church which is known as St. COLUMBS and is the Church of Ireland cathedral..

Are you looking for one particular record in a particular period or wanting a much more general search done for a family/surname over a wider range of dates? Churches don't have the staff to do genealogical research and some clergy don't respond to such requests.

Records for St. Columb's (Templemore Parish) go back to 1642 and PRONI, as well as Coleraine Library, have microfilmed copies. If you can't get to either place then you might be able to order the same microfilms from your local LDS library for a small fee to be viewed there.

However, if the family you are researching were Church of Ireland, St. Columb's is not the only possibility in Derry. If you want to give us more details of what you are trying to find we might be able to find information or offer more specific advise.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Agadowy,

Thank you for your reply, and yes this is a specific record, that of James Campbell, born circa 1851, fathers name James Campbell, mother Mary ?  I have exhaustively researched for a baptism for him believing he was roman catholic, but to no avail. But given the anomalies in relation to his marriage, and various incidents throughout  the family history, I feel my only option is to now look at the possability of him being from another denomination.
It would answer a lot of questions if this proved correct, I am also aware, that he could equally have been Presbyterian and if the Church of Ireland offers no matches I will then eliminate the other possabilities,  before I throw the towel in.

This decision is not on a whim, but it seems crazy that I can't take my research any further back than my G.Grandfather.

Your guidance and patience is much appreciated

regards
Rinding

Hi RINGADING,

http://derry.rootsireland.ie/
has a record of a James Campbell, father James ..born 1850 and
baptised in Long Tower Catholic Church.
It's a pay per view site ... it might be worth having a look.

Hi all, sorry I have been tardy in replying to your posts, but been away over christmas time. I am aware of this record at the long tower, however, its not my James campbell.  ??? My James Campbell's mother was Mary ?, its stated on James Campbell marriage certificate in 1868. Nice  try though lol

I just want to say thank you so much for taking the trouble to do the research you have, and if anything else pops up, I would be delighted to hear from you all.

Hi,
Irish marriage certificates do not give the mothers' names , only the fathers. Was the marriage to Mary McAleer in Long Tower R.C. Church?
