Just spotted your last post. Newington rung a bell. William and Matilda married in Newington district and their son William Edwin was baptised in Newington church in 1859. So there were Kitch family connections there.

:) Agree, seems like most of the family of John and Fanny moved around there, it is the James/Jane marriage that has me beat at the moment!

On Familysearch: Fanny Jane Kitch born in 1844 and baptised the same year at the Wesleyan chapel, South Petherton, Somerset, daughter of John and Fanny.

Also on Familysearch:
1881 census Clerkenwell, Middlesex
W Baker head 44 years Bridgnorth, Shropshire
J F Baker wife 36 years Ilminster, Somerset
J H K Baker son 10 years London St. James
F Kitch mother in law 75 years Membury Devon

Perhaps Fanny Jane just lived with James Smith. There doesn't seem to be a marriage for them.

The elusive Charles Kitch may be in the 1891 census. Familysearch have in their index a Charles Kitch aged 59 years head born Kingsbridge and living in St. Paul, Deptford. If it is him that was where his wife Mary Ann Kitch was living in the same census.

 :)
Gilding, Eagle, Perry, Wright, Twite, Cooper, Gibson and Ramm in West & Central Norfolk.
Littlewood, Bacon, Oxley and Fairbrother in North East Essex.

;D Looks from this probate to have been a marriage breakdown!

Charles Kitch occ Shipwright of 25, Fairfield Place, North Street, Bedminster died 14th December 1906 Probate 18th February 1907 to Richard Milton occ Timekeeper £151 1s

PS 2 to sort out, looking at the original 1861 for Fanny, Fanny the daughter ie Fanny Jane, has the middle name YALLON, not Jane, Yallon/Yallen is an assured surname, so why?
The Grandson aged 1 b Cullompton transcribed on one site as Ritch, but looks to be overwritten with Robello??

Thank you very much for finding all those census. The surname certainly comes in many spellings!

The death of Charles Kitch in Bedminster looks like the right man - another good find. I was looking in the London area. He got about! The probate is interesting - nothing for his children.

I had wondered about Fanny's name in the 1861 census. If Yallon is a surname could it have been a name passed down through Fanny's family - her mother's maiden name perhaps.

:) It's that grandson that is causing me problems, on original the name could be Frederick but cannot find a likely birth, the Yallon for Fanny looks pretty clear though?

;D Me again, I would not be at all surprised if the maiden name of Fanny was Dolling ie the maiden name of Matilda Kitch, have you followed the widowed Matilda to the 1881census, if so, clues can be obtained!!

1881 census

Robert Dolling 84 Widower occ Formerly Dairyman b MEMBURY,  Devon
Matilda Kitch 52 Daughter/Widow occ Nurse S M S b Buckland St Mary
Sarah Lucy Newbury Dolling 4 Grandaughter b Broadway, Chard
Residing at South Street, Broadway, Chard

In 1851 Robert 55 with wife Sarah 44 and family are in Donyatt, so the Kitch and Dolling familes were close neighbours.
Census ref HO107/1927/218/27

Marriage Robert Dolling to Sarah Newberry 29th March 1827 Buckland St Mary
Death Robert Dolling 7th November 1884 Broadway, St Aldheim & St Eadburgh aged 88
Death Sarah Dolling 28th January 1878 Broadway St Aldheim & St Eadburgh aged 70

I hadn't gone back on Matilda - but I like your thinking!

Just had a look at Dolling from Membury on Familysearch and have only found one baptism so far: Thomas of Richard and Mary in 1791. This family could be promising, though, as its in the right time period.
