Fiona,

the other name for Bastardy Bonds was Affiliation Orders -- but search the local County Archive under the name of the mother. These orders don't usually give a child's name -- but do give the mother's name and the alleged father.

The local Parish officials often forced the mother to give the father's name to make him pay towards the child -- to save the Parish from having to give the mother poor relief.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi All and many thanks for your help and info.

I've heard back from Cheshire Archives who say the info would be "amongst the records of the Overseers of the Poor of the parishes of Mottram in Longdendale or Godley cum Newton Green" but there is nothing in their catalogues. Oldham Archives and Cheshire FHS didn't have anything either.

Back to the drawing board....

Until next time, thanks to you all.
