Dalzells of Ireland
« on: Monday 25 April 11 05:31 BST (UK) »
Trying to find my Dalzell ancestors from Ireland. My 4th Great grandfather was Thompson Dalzell born 1810 Newtownards County Down and died 1885 in New Zealand, His parents were David Dalzell of Carrickfergus and Mary Jackson daughter of Reverend James Jackson who preached for 40 years in the congregation of Ballibay and owned the estate of Ballyregan. Mary was a relative of president Andrew Jackson. I am trying to find the parents of David Dalzell if anyone can help me.

To find Irish ancestors for such an early period you need to see if church records exist.
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I happened to come across the name Dalzell on Headstone #20, Newtowncrommelin Presbyterian Church Burying Ground. It belongs to the Rev. Malcolm Orr, for 39 years minister of that church. Erected by his widow and daughters. Widow Isabella Dalzell, born near Portaferry, Down 22 May 1807, d. 24 Feb 1894. Also his daughter Isabella Dalzell, b. 17 Feb 1850, d 21 Jan 1935.

Greetings,

No idea how long this post has been up here.

I have information on this family gleaned from various sites. However, it all seems to fall in line and hash out. Hence:

Thompson Dalzell - c. 1810  - 1885 NZ, was son of
David Dalzell - 1760 Carrickfergus - 1828 Newtownards (+ Mary Jackson), son of
Robert Dalzell - 1713 Newtownards - 1786 Newtownards ( + Jean UNK- 1717 - 1784)

Logic: If David is Robert and Jean's son it would appear they had him later in life, but mid 40s is not that late. Moreover, there is a grave marker for Robert and Jean in Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards that also states their (most likely) son's wife Sarah McKibben is buried with them. David married a Sarah McKibben before Mary Jackson (1757-1793).
