Jeremiah Livingston, badge identification please
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 08:08 BST (UK) »
I have not been able to positively identify my gt uncles military record but now that I know how to post a photo perhaps someone can identify his regiment.

Although Jerry was a grocers assistant in Dublin in 1911, I think he moved to Londonderry before 1914 along with the most of the family. My grandfather, his brother, was in the RFA but his hat badge is different.

I think it is Royal Army Ordnance Corps:  see http://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/unit-info/4459/ for comparison

I agree, but  I think it is the 1920 - 47 version (from the collar badge that is)
Shaun I think that link is broken, I used Badges of the British Army 1820 - 1960 (item 297)

Thank you both. I do not know when Jerry joined up but he looks much younger in this photo than in another in a family group. I suspect the other photo was near the end of the war or maybe even as late as 1924, if it was taken when Jerry's sister married. Jerry was still in uniform so I had thought it should be earlier.

I had not considered that Jerry might have continued on in the army after WW1 or even joined after the war but that could explain why he might be in uniform as late as 1924.  If it was 1924 that would explain why my grandparents were not in the group, as they left for NZ in 1922. Jerry  left Ireland for Australia c1928.

Cheers

Linda

The link worked for me and took me to an image of the badge.

If he served after 1920 you may be able to order his records from MOD (£30 fee)

Good morning,

Definitely RAOC by his shoulder titles. Most certainly post 1919 as before that the badge was just the shield over the scroll. The garter and crown were added after that date. He is wearing the 2nd version on this link as the uniform is wrong for the 3rd one.

Thank you. As I knew nothing about the RAOC I have been looking for a bit of background info. On a RAOC forum I found a list of the Companies in 1914 and discovered there was one in Dublin. So maybe Jerry did not move north to Londonderry after all.

No 3 Coy with Sections at Dublin, Curragh, Haulbowline under Irish Command

From what I have read, Jerry's pre wartime occupation of grocers assistant, could have been valuable in the context of supply organisation.

He has no Medal Ribbons so may have had no overseas service....Ireland at that time was classed as Home Service unless he did serve overseas and medals hadn't been issued so date of photo would be 1918-1921 (they had been issued by then)
