R. F. A 1914-18
« on: Friday 29 August 14 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all, my grandad Walter Tippey served with the R. F A during the great war, his details:

Walter Tippey. 217410 Driver  { lead horse rider i believe }

My grandad Walter had in his possesion a copy of a letter { very old copy now }
of the French Criox De Guerre being awarded to the brigade commander 149th R.F.A

I dont know if my grandad Walter's war records survived, i do have his medal.
I would like to know if my grandad took part in the fighting mentioned here in this letter,
and!!! any thing that can tell me more about grandad Walter.
Grandad passed away when i was about 12yrs old, i was given old copy of letter and grandad's
medal because of my absolute love of family history.
Any help on grandad would be greatly appreciated.
All the best.
Derek :)
ps was grandad conscripted? when did he leave army.

There is no service record for him on the surviving WW1 list.  His Medal Roll Index card does not show any country or date in the theatre of war section

There is a small write up for the 149th RFA that will give you some basic info, it is also possible
that someone that has more information or stories of the brigade may submit in the future, the
website is worth a look at.

The 149 RFA war diary will give some detail on what they were up to, but don't expect to find many names of individuals.

I don't know if you have got the war diary yet, but you can be lucky. My Great Uncle was in the 87th Brigade RFA, and going through the War diary i suddenly found 5 pages containing a roll of all officers and Men in the unit at the start of June 1916, including my relative.
