Singleton Family Bournemouth
« on: Monday 11 April 11 17:40 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on my grandfather Robert Leslie Singleton's family.  His father was also Robert Leslie Singleton and his mother was Elizabeth Singleton nee Danks.  My grandfather was born 19.1.1920 in Bournemouth and he had two older sisters, Wyn and May.   I believe his father was from somewhere around Kidwelly in Wales and that his mother was also from elsewhere in the UK.  All have since left Dorset and my grandfather and his sisters are no longer with us and I cannot find any documentation to help me with tracing their parents' families.  If anyone can help please let me know!

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)

A copy of Robert and Elizabeth's marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of his father, which will help you trace his family.

Hi and welcome
We cannot offer 1911 look ups but the index is free to search and there are lots of suggestions on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,492718.0.html
As they married in 1907 you should be able to find them together and looking at the image will give their ages and place of birth.
www.freebmd.org.uk may also have death records for them and some give a date of birth which might enable you to find a birth on there too.

Thank you both for these tips - I'll try to order the marriage certificate.  I've been using ancestry.co.uk but I can't find their marriage on FreeBMD anywhere but will keep trying.  Without knowing a place of marriage, or the place of birth for Elizabeth Danks, I'm really stuck to pin them down.

Should I perhaps contact the Bournemouth register office to see if I can find details of my great grandfather from the birth certificate of my grandfather, as I am fairly sure he was born in Bournemouth?

Hi,

Robert's birth:

Robert L Singleton   MarQ 1920    Christchurch    2b 1556       (from FreeBMD)

I'm not sure if the staff would give you details from the certificate;  you will probably have to buy a copy.

Thanks Nanny Jan and Jebber this looks like we could be onto something.  I'll follow up the Warwickshire RL Singleton.  You're very very kind!  I've ordered the marriage certificate from the GRO now that I have a date and a location so hopefully I'll be able to trace the parents too.

This is a bit of a long shot, but I've posted details of a Bible in my possession on the Family Bibles Board, and the names inside are William & Mary Singleton (1857).  Any chance they are in your tree?
