It is highly unlikely that he suffered any penalty. Many men deserted, this could be a deliberate act or just getting drunk and missing the sailing of the ship, both would be recorded as 'run'. In many instances men signed on in another ship later in their careers, and if the 'run' was found it could be removed from their record with the Admiralties approval, entitling a man to a pension, so not quite so bad as it sounds!

Hi Martin,
I don't actually know if this is the correct James Bush as don't know this sailors age. I guess National archives could hold something as I can't find much at all on HMS Oberon or where it visited. Just know he would have got a medal in 1855 if not an "r". I can't find any James Bush that fits after so think he probably died. Tree research is so frustrating! Sarah Adaline was never found either.

Thanks for your info. Much appreciated.
